Passover 2017

  Passover and the Social Agenda

As you imagine that you personally left Egypt, please consider those in Israel who are not completely free.

At MJB we will be thinking of children at risk, people with disabilities, refugees, poor families, homebound seniors, and others.

The Haggadah connects us to current pressing social issues — reducing poverty, expanding opportunities for the disadvantaged, and finding effective solutions to enhancing the well-being of Israel’s most vulnerable members.

Deuteronomy Chapter 15

7 If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them.

8 Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need.

15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today.

Deuteronomy Chapter 24

14 Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.

17 Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this.

20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow.

21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow.

22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this.

Exodus Chapter 22

20 Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.

Exodus Chapter 23

9 Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.

Leviticus Chapter 19

32 Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.

33 When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them.

34 The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

 Deuteronomy Chapter 10

19 And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.
