The Middle East Program (MEP) was established as a joint endeavor of the Institute, JDC-International Development Program, and JDC-Israel. In the past, the program has carried out major cooperative efforts in areas such as health care, violence prevention among youth, opportunities for the disabled, and care for the elderly.
A major focus in recent years has been the collaboration to reduce breast cancer and address its consequences. The COPE Breast Cancer Forum collaboration, supported by the Komen Foundation, engages Israeli and Palestinian breast cancer survivors, their families, and relevant professionals. In 2015, COPE restructured the existing program to target local communities where infrastructure for support is currently weak.
In addition, MEP is currently partnering with Mashav (Israel's Agency for International Development), the Golda Meir Mount Carmel International Training Center, and the Green Land Society for Health Development to run a professional development course for Palestinian and Israeli physical therapists. Beyond developing specific professional skills, the workshop also helps to foster a regional peer support network of physiotherapy professionals.
