Older Adults in the Wake of the Israel-Hamas War – An Interactive Report

About 1.6 million people aged 60+ live in Israel, and roughly 28% of them reside in areas severely affected by the Israel-Hamas war. Many have been directly harmed or know someone who has been affected, which may influence their health, functioning, mental well-being, and economic situation. For this reason, there is a need to adapt services to this population.

As part of this study, a survey was conducted among people aged 60+ in 13 municipalities, in two phases:

  • The first phase was carried out between December 2023 and February 2024 in Ashdod, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, and Netanya.
  • The second phase took place between May and September 2024 in Kiryat Bialik, Emek Izrael, Shefar’am, Bat Yam, Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Be’er Sheva, Ofakim, Kiryat Malakhi, and Ashkelon.

The purpose of the survey was to examine the impacts of the war on the lives of older adults, with a focus on indicators of successful aging across seven life domains: health and functioning, economic and employment status, emotional and social well-being, healthy lifestyle, active lifestyle, digital literacy, and support networks and trust.

The data collected in the cities surveyed were compiled into a central database, which formed the basis for an interactive BI-based report.

Objectives of the report:

  1. To create a practical tool for generating key insights from the survey data.
  2. To enable comparisons between municipalities and among respondents with different background characteristics within each municipality.
  3. To provide rapid responses to a wide range of policy-relevant research questions.

The report allows end users to:

  1. Compare municipalities across the numerous indicators examined.
  2. Segment the survey indicators by various background characteristics, including age, gender, level of religiosity, marital status, education, income, and disability.
