The Gateway to Academia Program: Promoting the Integration of Young Bedouins in the Negev in Higher Education

This study was part of a multi-faceted research program for the Government of Israel’s five-year plan to promote the wellbeing of the Bedouin in the Negev, carried out in cooperation with the Senior Division for the Socio-Economic Development of the Bedouin Society in the Negev

A comprehensive review of the Gateway to Academia Program details the barriers and challenges facing young Bedouins in the Negev who seek to integrate in higher education in Israel. It describes the structure and components of the program, and how they are designed to meet these difficulties. Findings from a variety of studies evaluating the program are presented, pointing to its achievements and contributions as well as to several weaknesses. Finally, recommendations for optimizing the program and maximizing its impact are presented.
